Sanderson surprised at Streatham Redskins’ hammering of Solent

Solent Devils 1-7 Streatham Redskins

Will Sanderson gave his Streatham Redskins teammates plenty of praise following their comprehensive win over Solent Devils in Gosport on Sunday.

Callum Best gave Streatham the lead in the opening period before Sean Scarbrough scored just seconds after the first break to double the advantage.

Best grabbed his second of the game when his side were two men shorthanded, and Steven Fisher made it 4-0 before the end of the second period.

Streatham’s Evander Grinnell scored at the beginning of the third period and, despite Solent pulling one back, Dom Hopkins and Fisher added two more goals to complete an outstanding win.

That was Streatham’s second consecutive victory on the road and they remain unbeaten away from home this season.

And Sanderson felt that, despite his side’s slow start to the game, their performance showed how much confidence they have.

“Once we managed to pick up the pace and get the first goal it was as if we got the ball rolling,” said Sanderson.

“They had a really good result the previous Saturday so they must have been on a high and I think we went into the game maybe a little bit worried about that.

“But as soon as we started to realise we were the better side we started to put the puck in the net.”

Despite Streatham’s good record against Solent in previous seasons, Sanderson admits the result surprised him.

“It’s a very comprehensive win and we’ve gone there in the last couple of seasons and managed to put the puck in the net quite a lot,” he said.

“But the previous games have definitely been closer at their ice rink so to come away with this result is excellent.”

Sanderson felt the recent away wins have given Redskins the confidence to keep going ahead of their next challenge at the London Raiders in the South One Cup next Sunday.

He said: “If we can turn up against the Raiders and just go in with the same kind of performance then I think we really are going to set ourselves up for another good run.

“That will then give us plenty of much needed confidence ahead of a tough few home games after that.”
