PETA has teamed up with luxury department store Liberty to donate unwanted fur coats to the homeless this winter.
The animal charity, whose motto reads in part that ‘animals are not ours to wear’, runs a fur donation programme where items are used in anti-fur demonstrations, donated to animal shelters and handed out to people in need.
PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi explained that those people who have had a change in heart about wearing fur can still put the item to good used.
She said: “Thanks to dozens of donors who dumped their furs in favour of kindness, PETA is able to send a vital message about having compassion for animals this winter – that only people desperately lacking basic necessities have any excuse to wear fur.
“We’re calling on kind people to keep the homeless in their hearts this Christmas and to show compassion for animals at the same time by donating any real fur items to those in need.”
PETA campaigns against the use of fur in the clothing industry and has staged a number of outlandish protests at major fashion events.
Their investigation last year into the angora industry revealed distressing images of the way rabbits are treated during the process which resulted in a number of high street giants withdrawing angora products from their stores.
