Surbiton’s hockey stars are top of the leagues as solid season continues

Chris Grassick claims he is revelling in the atmosphere inside the Surbiton dressing room after a 7-1 away win against Brooklands Manchester University in the NOW: Pensions Men’s Hockey Premier Division.

Two goals from Grassick and Matt Daly as well as strikes from Rupert Shipperley, Geoff McCabe and Alan Forsythe secured the points.

The result sees Surbiton go top of the league for at least 24 hours and Grassick is pleased with the form and unity the side are showing.

He said: “We’ve had lots of team talks from Todd Williams, we’re all singing from the same hymn sheet.

“It’s really coming together and really exciting to be playing in the squad.”

The victory is Surbiton’s third on the bounce and Daly’s goals take his tally for the season to 12.

Last season Daly was the division’s top scorer with 22 goals and the former Olympian looks set to top that total this year as he averages 1.7 goals a game.

The hosts gave little resistance and the result never looked in doubt after Forsythe broke the deadlock with a penalty stroke in the 11th minute.

Shipperley added a second immediately from the restart and the Sugden Road outfit never looked back.

Elsewhere, Surbiton came from behind to rescue a point away against Holcombe in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division.
