Wimbledon cruise to victory over Cobham

Wimbledon 42-10 Cobham

Wimbledon finally overcame a spirited Cobham side to score six tries under the watchful eye of head coach Nick Easter of Harlequins and England.

Bottom of the table Cobham started well but failed to take their chances in the opening quarter and were made to pay the price.

Wimbledon’s first half tries came from Cobham’s mistakes, which the home side ruthlessly exploited with touch downs from Thomas Moore and Neil Brown, both converted by captain Neil Hallett who had opened the scoring with a penalty.

Wimbledon went in 17-3 at half time and another try early in the second half from Stephen May set the home team away again. Cobham however struck back with an impressive run around move, finished off by their winger.

But Wimbledon turned the screw with three more tries of their own, ending with a text book team  try, keeping possession with tight passes finally sending Christopher Lewis in under the posts.

Head coach Nick Easter was very pleased with what he saw from his new charges: “There is still a lot to work on in training but what we have done so far is paying off. This early in the season that is very good to see.”

Cobham enjoyed most of the territory in the first half hour but those two mistakes in defence cost them dearly.

The sin binning of two of their players didn’t help their cause, with Wimbledon capitalizing on their one man advantage to score two of their tries.

Easter praised the team’s ability to weather that early pressure: “They didn’t panic and managed to keep their structure.”

The victory raised Wimbledon up to second in the London One South table ahead of next week’s match away at Havant.

The side have now won their last four games and are looking to exceed their fifth-place league finish last year.

Team Manager James Ogilvie-Bull commented: “We said at the end of last season we wanted to push on and really go for it this year. We feel there is a really good opportunity for promotion this time round.”
