Brixton creatives are set to fling open their doors to the public during the annual Lambeth Open this weekend.
Now in its fifth year, art lovers will have the chance to catch a glimpse inside the homes, private studios and exhibition spaces of painters, photographers, jewellery makers and sculptors during the two-day event.
Visitors can follow the official trail which will guide them around Lambeth to the private space of each artist, gaining a real insight into the procedures and creative practises of each person.
Event organiser and artist Tim Sutton, who also organises the Urban Art Fair in Brixton, explained: “This is an affordable way for artists in the borough to show their work and a very accessible way for visitors to see art and craft work, and meet the people who created them.
“Lambeth has a rich resource of creative people and we really should be showing this off to the rest of London.”
Brixton artist John Bateson is a regular at the event, and will be exhibiting work alongside his day job as an occupational therapist.
He said: “I grew up in Stockwell around my mother, grandmother and grandfather who were all painters – I suppose it’s in my blood!
“Over the last five years Brixton especially has become really different and lots of people, for one reason or another, associate it with arty things so I think people are curious.
“They want to talk about you and your paintings.”
The launch event will take place tonight at The Portico Gallery from 6pm to 9pm.
You can see John’s work along with the selection of other exhibiting artists from 10am to 6pm on October 4 and 5.
