Sutton United given FA Cup fright by Non-League minnows FC Romania

Sutton United survived a second-half fightback to avoid an FA Cup banana skin against FC Romania.

United were 3-0 up by half time in the second qualifying round tie thanks to two Glen Southam penalties and a Michael Spillane effort from 20 yards.

But two Ilie Vasile strike gave Romania – three tiers below Sutton in the non-league pyramid – cause for optimism, but United held on to record a 3-2 win and move into the third qualifying round, where they play Burgess Hill Town at home.

Manager Paul Doswell said: “I said to them at half time that we need to improve a bit with our pressing, but that didn’t seem to happen in the second half.

“We didn’t play great but it produced a good game for the neutrals.”

Raynes Park Vale’s history-making cup run came to an end as they lost 2-1 at Billericay Town, with Simon Moore’s late strike not enough to force a replay.

Met Police are out though as they lost an engrossing game 4-3 to East Thurrock United, despite Michael Charles continuing his fine form by scoring twice.

Kingstonian face a replay at home to Romford tonight after drawing 0-0 on Saturday, while Tooting & Mitcham play Bishop’s Stortford again tomorrow night after their game also finished goalless.

If Kingstonian get through they will face either Eastbourne Borough or Enfield Town, while Tooting will face East Thurrock United.

In the Ryman Premier League, Hampton & Richmond Borough beat AFC Hornchurch to make it three wins in a row. Luke Wanadio scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win.

In Ryman League Division One, Corinthian Casuals failed to close the gap on league leaders Burgess Hill as they lost 2-1 to Herne Bay.

Walton & Hersham beat Chipstead 1-0 while Walton Casuals picked up another point as they drew with East Grinstead Town 1-1.

In the Combined Counties League, Colliers Wood United beat Westfield 2-0.
