Government ‘revenge porn’ web chat invites victims to share experiences in bid to tackle rising problem

A revenge porn web chat hosted by the Ministry of Justice will take place today to understand the scale of the issue in the UK and how best to tackle it.

This consultation follows the theft and online leaking of naked photographs of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities yesterday.

Revenge porn refers to the distribution of images which are sexually explicit or involve nudity without the consent of the person depicted and with the intention of causing distress to that person.

Criminal and Civil Law Policy team member at the Ministry of Justice, Lyndsey, said that the purpose of the discussion was to gain the public’s thoughts on the current response to dealing with revenge porn.

She said: “This discussion will be an opportunity for me and others in the team to listen to your comments.

“We’re keen to hear about your experiences of revenge porn as representatives of charities and support organisations, web and digital companies, police, policy makers, lawyers and academics.”

The web chat, hosted by policy officials, will take place between 2.30pm and 4.30pm and can be accessed here.

An online survey will also be open to people until September 7 and can be viewed here.
