Library users and workers are welcoming the launch of the Lambeth Manifesto for Libraries.
Childrens author and national library campaigner Alan Gibbons is supporting the campaign, which lays out the local commitments for the borough following the publication of the National Voices for the Library Manifesto for Libraries.
The manifesto itself highlighted what facilities all public libraries should provide, including wide-ranging book stock, up-to-date free ICT facilities, e-books and dedicated services for teens.
It also cites volunteer opportunities only as a support to paid staff, not as a substitute.
Mr Gibbons said he was worried about the state of libraries in the UK.
“Libraries are not in decline because of some natural, historic progression, but because of the monstrous cultural vandalism of savage cost-cutting. We will pay a terrible price for the behaviour of our masters.”
Ruth Cashman, UNISON Branch Secretary and library worker welcomed the Lambeth Manifesto for Libraries.
“Libraries open a door to a world of knowledge and ideas, they inspire people to explore and achieve, libraries change lives for the better.
“To continue this, we need to invest in our books, our computers, our buildings and our staff,” she said.
