Oceana nightclub temporarily lost its license after the murder of Jamie Sanderson last year.
The controversial Oceana nightclub in Kingston will reopen tonight under the new name ‘Pryzm’, after a £1million investment.
The nightclub, on Clarence Street, had its license revoked by Kingston Council after the murder of 20-year-old Jamie Sanderson last year.
Despite strong opposition from residents, doors will re-open tonight with a ticket-only party featuring special performances including Britain’s Got Talent contestants Globots.
The investment includes a new app that allows customers to order and pay for drinks through their smart phone or tablet with Paypal or credit/debit card for them to be delivered to their table.
General manager, Dan Corry said: “Oceana was a successful brand for 11 years but fashions and trends evolve and we are delighted to be part of the new Pryzm roll-out which reflects the multi-characteristics of the new design.
“The refurbished club design will have three dance arenas, an exclusive VIP area plus a chic and stylish bar all under one roof, appealing to a broader and more mature customer base.”
The rebranding of the club has received mixed reviews.
Jennifer Calden, 20, student at Kingston University, said: “I still think it would be good to have new facilities in, even though students living in Kingston were fond of Oceana.”
However, the mother of tragic 20-year-old Jamie criticized the clubs new safety measures and told the Surrey Comet: “They’re just following procedure. They have to do that by law.
“They’re a business. And they want to stay open.”
The decision to reopen the club was met by angry residents who believed the premises should not be used as a nightclub after the tragic murder last year.
