Stunning results across the capital last night have raised Lambeth Council Leader Lib Peck’s hopes that Labour will hold on to the borough.
Labour has already won two Conservative seats in Hammersmith and Fulham and Croydon, as well as picking up the NOC borough of Redbridge, gaining a total of 159 seats so far.
“There’s been astonishing results already in some parts of London,” said Ms Peck.
“The big battle between Labour and the Tories is the one that Labour has won, in Hammersmith and Fulham. I don’t think anyone was really predicting that would go to Labour, so it’s a tremendous victory.
“We are confident of keeping hold of the council here in Lambeth, but let’s see what the results are when they’re counted.”
Jim Dickson, Herne Hill Labour party candidate explained he believed there is a strong hold in Lambeth because Labour has kept council tax low, provided good services to the population and tried to involve community in services.
Labour’s manifesto includes a major expansion of sports and leisure, have promised to tackle crime hotspots and increase the number of police in Lambeth and tackle the shortage of primary school places in the borough.
“I think the fact that there is a young, well-educated, ethnically diverse population is positive for Labour,” said Mr Dickson.
“The numbers from the sampling of the ballot are looking strong in wards we have not had before so I am predicting a strong result for Labour.”
