Rod Stewart fans flocked to see the show based on his hits.
Fans of rocker Rod Stewart flocked to New Wimbledon Theatre this week to see Ben Elton’s West End hit ‘Tonight’s the Night’, based on some of the singer’s biggest hits.
Set in America, the show is focused around shy boy Stu (Ben Heathcote), a die-hard Rod Stewart fan who can’t bring himself to tell love interest Mary (Jenna Lee James) how he feels about her.
One night Stu makes a deal with the devil (Tiffany Graves), and swaps his soul for Rod’s. But he soon finds out the hard way that you can’t find true love using another man’s moves and that devil or no devil, there’s only one Rod Stewart.
Ben Heathcote is charming as Stu, capturing both sides of the main character brilliantly as well as belting out some of Rod’s greatest hits including Stone Cold Sober, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy and Maggie May.
The show is full of brilliant one liners, with Stoner (Michael McKell) getting some of the biggest laughs throughout the night. But without a doubt the show was stolen by the fabulous Jenna Lee-James, who had the biggest cheer of the evening after performing I Don’t Want To Talk About It.
The audience were on their feet and dancing in the aisles for the finale megamix that included crowd favourites such as Sailing and Rhythm of My Heart with everyone swaying and wearing sailor’s hats that were given out by theatre staff during the interval.
Starring former Sugababe Jade Ewen, the show features 25 songs and is directed by Caroline Jay Ranger and choreographed by Denise Ranger. Overall the show is an easy and enjoyable watch with the audience singing along throughout to Rod’s best hits.
Rod Stewart has sold over 100 million records worldwide with a career spanning over five decades.
