Glenn Mulcaire scored the club’s first ever goal in 2002.
An ex-AFC Wimbledon footballer at the centre of the Brooks-Coulson trial admitted yesterday to hacking the voicemail of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, one of 4000 potential victims.
Glenn Mulcaire, 42, pleaded guilty to three new charges of hacking phones.
In 2007 Mulcaire spent six months in prison for accessing the voicemails of members of the Royal Family, for which he was paid £2000 a week.
Prosecutor John Evis QC said Mulcaire had been hacking phones for the News of the World since 2000.
Erik Samuelson, CEO of the League Two club, who are vocal about the high standards of behaviour expected from their footballers, would not talk about the trial but said: “Glenn played for us in our pre-season games and scored our first ever goal in 2002.
“It was our first ever goal so it isn’t surprising that it remains in the memories of our fans.”
An article published in 2002 by the Irish Independent described Mulcaire, known as ‘Trigger’ during his time at AFC Wimbledon, as ‘a shadowy figure,’ quoting his father, who said Mulcaire worked for an agency which worked for MI5.
His work was so secretive that even his father did not have his phone number, the article claims.
“It is a long time ago so my memory is vague but I assume Glenn left because he wasn’t getting games in the first team,” Mr Samuelson said.
