The Wandsworth Volunteering Fair was held last Thursday at Wandsworth Civic Suite.

Over 120 prospective volunteers attended the fair and were given opportunities to find out about a variety of opportunities in the borough.

As well as being able to find out about volunteering, visitors had the chance to meet around 30 charities and organisations recruiting volunteers and get expert information and advice from the Volunteering Wandsworth team.

Volunteering Wandsworth, part of community charity Groundwork London, works on behalf of the council to help people into volunteering.

Over the past year, the team smashed targets by signing up 3,460 new volunteers to a variety of roles – a big increase on the year before when 1,894 people registered.

Wandsworth Council aims to encourage people who live, work and study in the borough to volunteer.

As well as giving something back to the local community, it gives them a chance to learn valuable skills they need to enter, or re-enter, the world of work.

MumPlusMum scheme, who provide peer support and mentoring for mums-to-be and new mums, tweeted: ‘Great to meet so many lovely people and exciting causes’.

Battersea Summer Scheme revealed that they were able to recruit ‘a lovely volunteer’ at the event.

A fair spokeswoman said there are plans for the event to be held again next year.
