Twickenham Brunswick A.B.C. targets youngsters.
A redeveloped boxing gym in Twickenham officially opened last week after a £552k refurbishment.
Superior to its previous facility, Twickenham Brunswick A.B.C, located in Clarendon Crescent, targets young members aged 8 to 21. The new gym is greatly anticipated to produce a breed of British stars in the sport.
The renovated club will introduce girls boxing for the first time in the coming weeks, after inspiration from the success of the 2012 Olympics.
The centre will also open its doors to the Council’s Youth Offending Team, which will be hoping to use the facilities to positively stimulate the troubled youths.
After being funded by Richmond Council, the London Mayor’s Fund, Sport England and several more, the gym is able to operate with a great deal of space, replacing the site of a redundant scout hut.
Equipped with all new punch bags, speed balls, treadmills, cross trainers and two sparring rings, the set-up easily rivals many other professional gyms across the country.
Doug Orchard, President and Chairman of the Twickenham Brunswick Club said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of our borough to learn the noble art and at the same time keep fit.”
Being ABA accredited, its members will continue to compete at the highest level under Head Coach and ex professional boxer, Tony Rabbetts.
“It’s a new era for us, I’ve been teaching here for 22 years and we will continue to do very well,” said Mr Rabbetts.
Richmond council Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Pamela Fleming also commented: “It’s been a hugely valuable facility for some years but now it can provide activities for so many more young people. I’m sure the club will go from strength-to-strength.”
