The cattery is now open late on the last Thursday of every month.
The cats are fighting back as Battersea Dogs and Cats Home launches a campaign to promote its feline residents.
Despite the fact that the home has taken in cats for 130 years, it is still known primarily for its work with dogs.
Now, Battersea’s cattery is open until 8pm on the last Thursday – or Purrsday – of every month, to give cat-lovers an opportunity to visit outside working hours.
The Cat Takeover campaign is the start of a London-wide push to redress the balance and begins just as London prepares itself for another feline invasion.
Lady Dina’s Cat Emporium, where patrons can enjoy a cuppa and meet rescued cats, is opening soon in East London.
Battersea’s Head of Cattery, Lindsey Quinlan, is pleased with the campaign’s progress so far.
“It’s the cats’ turn to have their way,” she said.
“It’s early days but we’ve had a really great response to our Cat Takeover campaign and have seen a real increase in visitors to our London cattery.”
It’s hoped that people across London will benefit from the extended Thursday opening hours.
East Putney resident Lettie Overall, 24, said “I’m so pleased to hear Battersea’s cattery is now open late. I’ve wanted a cat for ages and this gives me so much more flexibility.”
The popular ‘Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs’ unexpectedly helped the cause when comedian Alastair McGowan adopted one of the cattery’s residents. Larry, of No. 10 Downing Street, is also amongst the famous former guests of BDCH.
Mary Tealby founded the charity in 1860 and by the turn of the century more than 500 cats were being cared for in Battersea.
Today they look after an average of 190 cats at one time throughout their three centres and foster homes and have re-homed more than 200,000 cats.
