London 2012 athlete Christopher Thompson attended the event.
Up to 3,400 hopeful runners signed up to participate in this year’s Richmond Running Festival at Old Deer Park.
British Olympian Christopher Thompson, who took part in London 2012, attended the event to encourage young participants and to help promote the sport.
The first race began at 8:30 with the highly anticipated VisitRichmond half marathon beginning at Kew Gardens. A 10k event followed shortly after, with the Nike Kids Mile finishing off a great day of sport with support in the thousands.
“The key was the fun factor of the event,” said Mr Thompson after the event.
“It was brilliant for those involved to get the experience in running, in a safe and enjoyable environment.”
A variety of stands including charities, running clubs and local businesses were set up for visitors, with a range of food and drink catering for runners and fans.
Angela Ivey, of VisitRichmond, stated: “It’s been phenomenal for local residents and people outside of Richmond, the exposure for the area has been brilliant. Fabulous family fun.”
Contestants were entitled to a medal, a free t-shirt and a pint of beer at the end of their race. Free massages and health advice was on offer for spectators as well as a mobile animal farm for the children.
Live bands such as The Chairs, Jump 66 and DS3 were maintaining the atmosphere throughout the day, performing on the Crawdaddy Club stage.
Race director Tom Bedford said: “The day has brought out the best in Richmond, there has been a great vibe about it.”
All volunteers involved were also praised highly as the event could not have functioned without their support.
Diana Nell, of the Mo Farah foundation, said: “It’s been a great day and all involved have really enjoyed it. The kid’s run was a superb way to finish”.
