Some are unhappy that such short notice was given.
Popular Astroturf pitches at Kennington Park are closed for two weeks, affecting clubs who use them regularly.
On Wednesday, the Victorian Grade II listed park noted the closure of their pitches for investigations into repair, and Lambeth Council tweeted about the announcement yesterday.
Lambeth Council Client Officer, Greg Knight, said that the closure will allow them to determine how to go about its repair and how much it will cost.
“It is closed for investigatory work into its repair and to work out contractor costs,” he said.
“We will update everyone on the situation in two weeks.”
Mr Knight believes many clubs will be affected as the pitches are heavily used by football and hockey teams from across South London.
“There are many clubs who have a block every week,” he said.
St Mark’s Football Club is one team affected by the closure, and Vicar Steven Coulson, 52, is unhappy with the decision and the short notice given.
“Our team plays every week at the Astroturf pitches. The announcement was given in short notice, I saw the news on Twitter and knew it would affect our club,” he said.
Hockey club London Wayfarers also play matches at the park regularly. They were forced to reschedule their match due on September 21 at Kennington Park against Reading Men’s 3s.
But Fixtures Secretary Simon Haspel does not see this as an issue, as there are a number of other facilities in the area such as Larkhall Park and Agnes Riley Gardens.
“We have multiple pitches that we use, I am able to find others,” he said.
