A man who tried to swindle his elderly mother out of her Kensington and Chelsea home and raked in almost £90,000 in benefits has been jailed for two years.
William Anthony,59, was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court for his deception which included creating a second identity using a fake passport in order to manage his large scale benefits scam.
When his mother went into a nursing home, Anthony claimed he lived with her and submitted fraudulent paperwork in order to get his hands on his mother’s home. His deception sparked a joint investigation which found him to be living and falsely claiming benefit for a property in Waverly Avenue.
Richmond Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, said that the jail sentence showed a very clear message to such criminals.
“This man is parasitic, he deserves to serve every second of his prison sentence, and many people will think he should have got longer,” he said.
“His fraud took £90,000 from vulnerable people who are in desperate need of help and he even turned on his own mother.
“These people need to be stopped and this Council will not rest until all the William Anthonys of this world are dealt with swiftly and decisively.”
In total, Anthony claimed £55,886 in Income Support and Disability Living Allowance, plus £21,721 in housing benefits.
On August 5 he pleaded guilty to three charges of fraud by false representation, one charge of theft by false interpretation and one charge of possessing documents with intent.
