The station was one of 12 set to close across the capital.
Clapham fire station is to remain open following months of campaigning by the local community.
Under plans put forward by London Mayor Boris Johnson, the station was one of 12 earmarked for closure, but after a number of high profile protests, the proposals will no longer go ahead.
Lambeth residents were particularly unhappy with the plans as the closure would have led to a four minute increase in emergency response times to fires, the biggest increase of any London borough.
“I’m delighted that we’ve managed to persuade the Mayor to reverse his plan to close Clapham fire station,” said Councillor Jack Hopkins.
“There was huge opposition from all communities to his proposal, with businesses, residents, trade unions and fire fighters all speaking out against the cuts.”
A total of ten stations will be closed under the Fifth London Safety Plan, and Clapham station will lose a fire engine.
Paul Embery, London secretary for the Fire Brigade Union (FBU), said: “Make no mistake, the decision to keep Clapham and New Cross stations open came about only because of the pressure of a sustained public campaign in which the FBU played a pivotal role. But that campaign doesn’t end here.”
The proposal will be discussed today, July 18, by the London Fire Authority.
