Calvin Humanikwa stole £50 from a man in a wheelchair.
A man has been jailed for three years after robbing an elderly disabled man in Croydon town centre.
Calvin Humanikwa, 25, stole £50 cash from a 70-year-old man in a wheelchair as he withdrew the money from a cashpoint in North End, Croydon.
Officers spoke to a member of the public who witnessed the incident and took her on a drive round the area to try and locate the suspect.
Humanikwa was identifiied and arrested in nearby George Street, after he had been into a local shop and bought alcohol and cigarettes with the money he had stolen.
He was charged later that day with robbery and pleaded guilty to the robbery on April 18. He was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Friday 5 July to three years imprisonment for robbery.
“Humanikwa clearly targeted the victim in this case due his vulnerability being elderly and in a wheelchair,” said DC Pete Brayton from Croydon CID, who investigated the case.
“Thankfully a member of the public helped us to identify and locate him shortly after the offence happened and we were able to arrest him and bring him before the courts.
“As a result of their actions a robber will now be off the streets for a considerable time. It also shows the importance of reporting robberies to police as soon as possible as we have a much better chance of finding the suspects in the hour or so after the robbery is committed.”
