Property prices offer good value for money.
Balham has been named as one of the most sought after places to live in the country, with more buyers looking to find homes in the borough than anywhere else.
Estate agents haart found that there were 46 buyers for every property in the SW12 postcode, compared with a London-wide average of 19 to one and a national figure of eight to one.
Property prices offer good value for money and the area offers growing numbers of shops, bars and restaurants in its town centre.
“Balham may have been derided by Peter Sellers but it is now being mooted as a kind of new Notting Hill – the hip south of the river enclave,” said Paul Smith, chief executive of haart.
Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia said he wasn’t surprised about the growing popularity of the area.
“It has the wonderful green open spaces of Tooting Common on its doorstep and is home to some amazing local schools. It’s bus, tube and rail links are pretty good too,” he said.
“Crime rates are very low, local services are among the best in the country and council tax bills are the lowest in the whole UK. When you bear all this in mind, it’s easy to understand why Balham is such a hotspot.”
