London Mayor Boris Johnson visited Nine Elms on the South Bank yesterday to celebrate the ‘topping out’ of the new Riverlight development.
Alongside Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia, Mr Johnson led the ceremony to mark the completion of the structural frame of the project which will provide 802 new homes, 250 jobs and 45 apprentices.
Councillor Govindia said it was fantastic to see the development moving forward at such a cracking pace.
“We are creating a fantastic new part of the city here which will deliver new jobs and growth for generations to come,” he said.
“As construction activity continues to rise across Nine Elms a steady stream of job, apprenticeship and training roles are coming forward which we are targeting towards our local residents.”
Job advisors are already in place to help local people with their applications and link candidates with opportunities which are right for them.
The five acre site, which has been designed by architects Rogers, Stirk, Harbour + Partners, includes 112 trees of seven different species with 60 per cent public open space.
Sean Ellis, Chairman of St James, said: “Riverlight is setting the benchmark for other developments of its kind, creating fantastic homes in an efficient manner without compromising on quality.”
St James is also creating two developments nearby on the Albert Embankment: the Merano Residences, also designed by Rogers , Stirk, Harbour + Partners, and 20-21 Albert Embankment by Foster + Partners.
