Across the capital, rough sleepers have increased by 13 per cent.
Lambeth has the second highest number of rough sleepers in the capital, a report released today has revealed.
In 2012/13, 585 people were seen sleeping on Lambeth’s streets, one of only six boroughs where the number of rough sleepers was more than 250.
Other South West London boroughs fared less badly, with the figures showing that in 2012/13 Merton had only 21 rough sleepers, Kingston had 19 and Wandsworth 63.
The survey, carried out by homeless charity Broadway, showed that overall rough sleeping has increased by 13% in the past year, with 6,437 people sleeping rough in 2012.
Leslie Morphy, chief executive of homeless charity Crisis, said: “The mayor of London pledged to eliminate rough sleeping in the capital by 2012.
“Instead we see today the number of people sleeping on London’s streets – in absolute destitution in one of the world’s richest cities – has more than doubled on Boris’s watch.”
This increase was lower than the 43% rise in rough sleepers seen between 2010-11 and 2011-12.
Other results showed that three quarters of new rough sleepers were only seen once compared to 70% in 2011/12 and 62% in 2010/11.
