Craig Gower will return to Australia for personal reasons.
London Broncos have a new captain at the club after Australian playmaker Craig Gower unusually stepped down from the role.
The club announced yesterday that Gower, who was tied to the club until 2014, has left by mutual consent to return to Australia for personal reasons.
Gravesend-born Tony Clubb will now be the new leader on the pitch.
Head coach Tony Rea believes that Clubb, who has represented England four times, is the right man to take on the job.
“Tony has all the attributes of a leader. He’s been in the system for eight years, leads from the front and is a proud Londoner,” Rea said.
“He has other attributes the team can look to in the heat of battle.”
The one-club man made his 150th appearance for the side in early May.
Rea, however, hasn’t ruled out other players wearing the armband as the season progresses and says Gower’s decision will offer other players the chance to lead out London.
“It certainly gives us an opportunity to share the leadership around,” the Australian coach said.
Chief Executive Gus Mackay paid tribute to Gower saying: “We’d like to thank Craig for his time in London with the Broncos. He was an exemplary trainer and always gave 100 per cent on the pitch.”
