Southfields residents are preparing themselves to be bugged by their children for the next 12 months following the success of Sunday’s Big Lunch.
Elborough Street was the scene as about 100 people gathered for a party, including a barbeque and some football games between the children.
The Big Lunch, an existing community initiative led by the Eden Project and partnered by Halifax, aims to bring local communities together and create a feel-good factor in British towns.
And that was certainly the case for those down Elborough Street and in particular the youngsters who were making full use of the road being closed off.
It was such a success that resident and one of the organisers Polly Kennedy is preparing herself to be bombarded by requests to do it all over again next year.
“We had an excellent Big Lunch on Sunday, everyone loved it and it was a great success – particularly with the children,” said Polly, a PR consultant.
“We had at least 100 people come down throughout the day and it was brilliant for the kids but also the adults too who took over as the day went on.
“We had lots of different barbeques going on and plenty of games for the kids who were making full use of the big space in the road to play football.
“A lot of the children were saying that they had made friends on the day because it was a great day as the kids weren’t playing alone in their gardens but in a big, wide open space.
“We are already being bugged about doing it again and having another street party and I don’t think the children will be able to wait until next year’s Big Lunch.”
Since 2009 thousands of Big Lunches have taken place and this year saw people up and down the country join forces to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.
This was the first Big Lunch Polly has helped organise but she admits she is already looking forward to doing it all over again next year.
“Our first Big Lunch was such a success that we are definitely thinking about doing it again next year,” she added.
“People are already putting ideas together about how to make next year’s even better and this one was so good for the street that I am hopeful it can carry on next year too.”
