London Broncos head coach Tony Rea is remaining positive ahead of Saturday’s basement battle with Castleford Tigers at Twickenham Stoop.
The Broncos lost heavily in their last home outing to Wigan Warriors before a ‘Magic Weekend’ loss to Catalan Dragons in Manchester, but have the chance to jump off the bottom of the Super League table tomorrow.
A win would give London their first double over any side in 2013, having beaten Castleford away in March, and Rea has been boosted by the return of a few senior players back into his squad.
“Antonio Kaufusi has been out for two games and Tony Clubb has been out working hard since his injury and they are very important to that middle section,” said the Australian.
“Luke Dorn comes back into the squad so we’ve got three senior blokes coming back in. It’s an exciting group to be working with.
“We’ve picked up quite a few bumps and we have injuries to Dan Sarginson, David Howell and Jamie O’Callaghan, these players should be back in one to two games while Tommy Lee could be back within three weeks.”
The Tigers picked up their first victory under new head coach, Daryl Powell, at the ‘Magic’ event and are two points above the Broncos with a far superior points tally in 12th.
Winger Kirk Dixon grabbed four tries as the West Yorkshire club put one over bitter rivals Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the Etihad Stadium.
Fellow strugglers, Salford City Reds, also registered a two-point haul in Manchester to leave London languishing at the foot of the table though the Broncos can overtake the Reds on points difference if they pick up a fourth win from their last five outings at the Stoop.
The South West London outfit were unable to continue their winning streak at home to league leaders,Wigan, two games ago but some good came out of the occasion.
The fixture aimed to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and a season’s high crowd of 3594 contributed £3511 for the charity.
Selco Builders Warehouse, the Broncos’ main sponsor, are striving to raise £100,000 for the cause and the company’s head of marketing, Helen Cooper, was impressed with the response of the fans.
“We’re delighted with the amount raised on Saturday and would like to thank the fans of London Broncos and Wigan Warriors for getting involved and supporting this very worthwhile charity,” she said.
“Not only were we able to raise more than £3,511 towards our target but we also made sure that the fans in attendance were aware of the valuable work Macmillan does up and down the country that simply wouldn’t be possible without fundraising efforts such as this.
“Monies were raised through ticket sales, with £1 from every ticket sold going to the charity, so a huge thank you to London Broncos for supporting our chosen charity.”
