A street cleaner killed last year was honoured last night at the Hammersmith and Fulham Heroes Awards.
Piotr Mickiewicz was stabbed to death in August 2012 when he tried to stop a burglar fleeing the scene in Rylett Road in Shepherd’s Bush.
He was posthumously awarded a crime fighter award, which was collected by his wife Busie in front of his parents and former work colleagues.
The event, held in the Mayor’s Foyer, was attended by over 80 people and recognised local heroes in five different categories
The final award of the night was presented to 84-year-old Ralph Land, who has raised £450,000 for the pancreatic cancer lab at Hammersmith Hospital through activities including a 12,000ft skydive with his identical twin Frank.
Other winners included Bill Cox in the charity worker category, who has been involved in running a Sunday morning five-a-side league at Lille Road Rec for 30 years, and Tara Thakkar, who won the young achiever award for her work within the St John Ambulance cadet movement.
Shepherd’s Bush model Kim Calera was presented with the Entrepreneur award, who has turned her life around after finding herself homeless on the streets of Mumbai. She now runs a successful jewellery business and donates some of her profits to charity.
H&F Council Leader, Cllr Nicholas Botterill, said: “The Council received numerous nominations for local people who really are doing incredible things. When we sat down to select the winners and runners-up last month, we were all genuinely taken aback by some of the things that people do purely because they want to put something back into the community.
“While there can only be one winner in each category, it is fair to say that all of the nominees deserve recognition as these are the people who help to make Hammersmith & Fulham the best place to live and visit in London.”
