Boris Johnson visited Wimbledon yesterday to launch a plan which would bring Crossrail 2 to South West London.
In the second phase of the project, the train would travel from Wimbledon through an underground tunnel to Tooting Broadway, Clapham Junction,Chelsea,Victoria, Tottenham Court Road, Euston, Angel, Dalston Junction, Seven Sisters and Epping. It could also extend to Hampton Court, Twickenham, Epsom and Chessington South.
After a short walk around Wimbledon High Street, Mr Johnson insisted that the line is vital in supporting the capital’s bright future.
“Crossrail is set to revolutionise travel in the capital, and with a predicted 10 million people expected to be living in London in 2031, pressing ahead with the next stage of the plan, Crossrail 2, is quite simply essential,” he said.
The scheme is expected to cost at least £15bn and if given the go ahead, would not be completed until 2018.
Residents across the borough have been asked for their views on two potential route options as part of a public consultation, both of which include stops at Clapham Junction and Tooting Broadway stations.
Leader of Wandsworth Council Ravi Govindia said:
“Our call for stops at Clapham Junction and Tooting Broadway have been met across both of these route options which would have major benefits for thousands of local people,” said Leader of Wandsworth Council, Ravi Govindia.
“I encourage Wandsworth residents to examine these two potential route options and to submit their views to the consultation.”
The consultation will run until August 2 2013 and aims to establish what level of support there is for the project.
