The money will allow for an upgrade of 91 trains.
South West Trains is spending £40million to upgrade 91 trains in its fleet in attempt to improve reliability and deliver environmental benefits.
In a recent Which? survey, South West Trains obtained only a 47% customer satisfaction rating, something that they are looking to combat with the investment.
South West Trains will be introducing lighter traction equipment to its Class 455 trains and 100 more carriages.
The upgrade will replace the current DC traction equipment and motors with an AC traction system which are more reliable and have reduced maintenance requirements.
A company spokesperson said the lighter units will reduce wear and tear on rails and have increased mileage.
South West Train routes go through Hampshire, Surrey, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Somerset and Greater London.
The project will be completed in spring 2014.
