The only English side left in Europe have been drawn against Tottenham’s conquerors.
Chelsea must overcome Tottenham’s conquerors Basel to reach the Europa League final – but boss Rafa Benitez says it is the best draw for his side.
The Swiss side have a good recent record against English clubs, beating Tottenham 4-1 on penalties last night and also beating Manchester United last season.
Chelsea, last years European Champions, edged past Rubin Kazan 5-4 on aggregate to remain the only English side left in Europe this season and Benitez knows that every team will be difficult to beat.
“We were thinking which team could be best for us in terms of the number of games that we have,” he said.
“Basel is not too far away so maybe that is a good option but just because of that, not because they don’t have a good team.
“They did well against Tottenham. We can see that are an offensive team and they play with a lot of intensity so it will be tough for sure. It will be interesting.”
The first leg will be played in Switzerland on April 25 with the return at Stamford Bridge a week later.
Benitez also confirmed they have no new injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester City.
Demba Ba and Ryan Bertrand were doubts but both took part in this afternoon’s training session.
Chelsea have won three of the last four FA Cup campaigns including beating Liverpool 2-1 in last year’s final.
