The Olympic legacy is set to continue in Merton with the 100 mile Prudential RideLondon-Surrey marathon cycle route being brought through the borough.
The race, which wants to become the cycling equivalent of the London Marathon, hopes to attract the same level of attention as its famous counterpart.
The original route would have seen the race miss Merton altogether, but lobbyists from the council managed to successfully persuade organisers to rethink the plan.
Councillor Nick Draper, Merton’s Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, said that the new route would showcase the borough.
“This is an ideal situation for Merton,” he said.
The RideLondon-Surrey received a rare cross-party seal of approval from the council with Councillor Draper saying it was one of those lovely occasions where everyone is in agreement.
The route will start at the Olympic Stadium and take in sites across London, including the West End, Westminster and Richmond. Cyclists will also travel into Surrey, facing Box Hill and surrounding Surrey Hills.
The Merton part of the race will see cyclists coming down the A3, through Raynes Park and up Wimbledon Hill.
The race will have two slightly different courses depending on levels of ability, but all will take in Wimbledon.
