Tomorrow’s event takes place at the All England Lawn Tennis Club
Last minute preparations are underway for an annual charity ball at the All England Lawn Tennis Club tomorrow evening.
The tennis club, better know for the sporting battles that have captivated the British public each summer, will be abuzz earlier than usual this year thanks to the black tie event.
Councillor David Williams, Mayor of Merton, who is also looking to set up a trust fund for other charities in the borough, hopes to raise £40,000 for the Wimbledon Guild with the aim of purchasing a new disabled access mini-bus for the charity.
The Guild, which is the mayor’s principle charity, was founded in 1907 and provides a wide range of services designed to aid the people of Merton. It has been a source of hope for many, especially in these times of economical hardship, offering aid to those who would not otherwise be able to afford it.
A 19 piece jazz group, London City Big Band, will be performing during the evening for anyone who feels the urge to take to the dance floor, and the evening will also include a raffle and an auction.
The ball will begin with a drinks reception at 6.45pm which will then be followed by dinner at 7.30pm with carriages home at midnight.
The three course meal is set to feature delights of thyme roasted butternut squash and baby mozzarella lasagne to start, char-grilled corn-fed chicken with an assortment of vegetables and lemon sorbet for desert.
Last year the event raised in the region of £24,000, and it is hoped a similar amount will generate the same amount for the worthy cause.
