A Surrey cricketer who died after being hit by a train at Wimbledon Park station was high on drugs at the time of his death, an inquest heard today.
Tom Maynard, 23, was electrocuted on a railway line before being struck by a train as he tried to evade police in the early hours of June 18 2012.
Westminster Coroner’s Court heard that he was stopped by police after being seen driving his black Mercedes erratically, and fled leaving his keys in the ignition.
Mr Maynard, who was tipped as a future England international, had been drinking at a Wandsworth pub with England bowler Jade Dernbach and former Surrey Captain Rory Hamilton-Brown in the hours before his death.
A post-mortem examination showed he was nearly four times the legal alcohol limit to drive and had also taken cocaine and MDMA.
The inquest also heard that hair samples taken show Mr Maynard may have been a regular drug user up to three and a half months before his death.
His family issued a statement today through the Professional Cricketers’ Association.
“The results of the inquest do not define our son. The fact that so very many people thought the world of him is what defines him as a person,” it read.
“The only people who would judge Tom on the findings of the inquest are people who didn’t know him. He made choices that night that tragically cost him his life but his devastated family and friends will love and miss him unconditionally always.
“He was a very special person and his death leaves a huge hole in all our lives.”
The jury delivered a verdict of accidental death.
