Grimm Tales runs from March 5 – 23.
The award-winning Grimm Tales is coming to Wimbledon’s Polka Theatre early next month as part of its 200-year anniversary celebrations.
The much-loved, magical tales have been told to awestruck families and children since the original stories were first published by German brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1812.
Just some of the classic tales recounted will be favourites such as Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and Aschenputtel, the original version of Cinderella.
Produced by Theatr Iolo, the production is based on an adaption by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and opened to rave reviews in Wales last year.
Kevin Lewis, who has been artistic director of the theatre for the past 21 years, hinted that UK audiences may be in for a shock.
“People will be familiar with some aspects of the tales but not so much with others. It has been called quite gruesome compared to some of the Disney versions,” he said.
“We have played it to family audiences across the UK and Wales and the one thing a lot of people have said to us is that they actually really like the dark gruesomeness of the story.
“Without giving anything away, I think people will be surprised at some of the things in the tales.”
Lewis also revealed the Polka Theatre has a special place in his heart and is thrilled to be able to return to the venue.
He added: “I auditioned at the Polka Theatre as an actor 25 years ago and our company have performed other shows there, so it’s great to come back.
“I was actually brought up near Wimbledon – in Worcester Park- and a lot of my family still live in the area, so hopefully they can come along too.
“For me the best part is watching with the audience and seeing them enjoying it. I love speaking to families afterwards and asking what they thought.
“I can’t wait to get started.”
The Grimm Tales runs from 5 – 23 March, with tickets priced at £12 for adults and £8 for concessions.
