Families and ice skating prodigies were among those skating at Hampton Court Palace’s ice rink yesterday.
Set on the Tudor landmark’s grounds, the rink is overlooked by the palace which is illuminated by multi-coloured lights to provide a spectacular backdrop to skaters.
The rink is open for six weeks during the Christmas season and is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.
Oliver Timms, who skated with his daughter Rosa, said the historical setting is the perfect way to begin the Christmas period.
“I’m looking at the ice most of the time because I’m not a very confident skater, but every time I grab a look upwards the palace really is the most beautiful backdrop.
“Having the River in the background really adds to the show – it is a wonderful treat.”
A live brass band provided the ideal soundtrack to skaters, playing popular Christmas numbers throughout.
Eight-year-olds Isabelle and Amelia were also on the rink.
Amelia said: “The band are great, I hope they play Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree. I’m definitely coming back next year.”
It was not just children and families enjoying the ice – professionally trained skaters performed many tricks and jumps.
Safety marshals also showed off their skating skills when they were not helping fallen skaters off the ice.
Marshals Nick and Ollie said: “There were a couple of falls we had to deal with – mostly from older people. It’s tiring work but great fun.”
Those looking for warmth after their skate went to the Ice Bar and Cafe beside the rink, which served drinks and festive snacks.
Ice skater Martin Howard said: “It is a beautiful setting here, you can look to the royal palaces as you go around with the lights changing colour.
“I come every year to Hampton Court Palace for my skating – it is my favourite ice rink.”
Hampton Court Palace ice rink is open from Saturday 1 December 2012 to Sunday 13 January 2013, excluding 25 December.
