Proposals for a footbridge to connect Chelsea Harbour and Battersea have been submitted for planning approval.

The Jubilee Footbridge, the first pedestrian crossing proposal in over ten years, would run between Chelsea Harbour and Battersea and alongside Battersea Railway Bridge.

The footbridge would stand where the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Flotilla started and would be a “fitting legacy of for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations” – according to Battersea architect and development firm One-World Design, who are leading the project.

Plans for the £22m project have been the submitted to Hammersmith and Fulham and Wandsworth Councils.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council confirmed that it received a planning application on November 2nd and are waiting for it to be validated.

Chris Medland, founding director of One-World Design, said, the footbridge would benefit people on both sides of the river in three main ways.

He added: “Firstly economically because there are quite a few new restaurants, cafes and bars and having footfall for the evening economy circuit would obviously benefit local businesses.

“It would benefit those who live in Battersea in particular who will be able to access the station at Imperial Wharf much more quickly. They can walk over the bridge in five minutes rather than walk over the other bridges.

“Thirdly environmentally, people will be able to use more sustainable methods of transport, walking and cycling, rather than say driving over to Sainsbury’s.”

Mr Medland said he first started putting pen to paper about a year ago and had been working with planners on both sides of the river for about six months.

He hoped the footbridge would receive funding from a corporate private sponsorship or high-net-worth individual, in a similar way to the ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture and viewing deck in the Olympic Park.
