Disabled sports enthusiasts are invited to take part in a variety of activities at Teddington Sports Centre tomorrow.

The Richmond-upon-Thames Inclusive Sports and Exercise (RISE) event aims to encourage young people in the area to participate in sports such as wheelchair basketball, golf, dance, tennis and football.

Coaches will be at hand to assist with activities and will help to provide an environment where participants can get involved without prejudice or exclusion.

Councillor Pamela Fleming, Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture, said: “RISE provides a great service to disabled people in the borough, giving them the opportunity to try new sports and meet new people in a friendly inclusive environment.”

Councillor Fleming added: “Following so soon after a fantastic showing by Team GB at this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games, many people are feeling inspired to try new things and get fit.”

All activities have been selected to ensure that participants can continue with the sport after the RISE event, by joining either a local club or one run by RISE.

RISE have also introduced a new project called RISE to Shine, which offers people the chance to become part of Team Richmond by competing against other boroughs in the London Youth Games.

Those wishing to attend can head to Teddington Sports Centre, where the event will take place from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

The event is free and is open to anyone.

RISE was developed by the council’s sports development team in collaboration with the Three Wings Trust.
