The re-launch of a multi-million pound hotel in Colliers Wood yesterday is set to help renovate the area.
Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Williams, officially opened the Holiday Inn Express after a £5 million refurbishment.
Councillor Williams said he was delighted to put the new hotel venture on its way.
He added: “It’s terrific to see this investment in Colliers Wood and the job opportunities it brings.
“Clearly it needs more investment but I think it is one of the most exciting parts of the borough in terms of its potential for development.”
MP for Mitcham and Morden, Siobhain McDonagh, also welcomed the hotel’s expansion.
“It is the best place in the world to live and I am very grateful to Holiday Inn for investing in my local community,” she said.
The project took one year and has added an extra floor with 56 additional bedrooms and conference rooms to the complex.
Kristin Hardin, General Manager, said the investment aims to attract corporate customers and businesses from around Wimbledon, Sutton and Morden.
The hotel franchise has prospered despite the recession.
Owner Minhaz Manji said he will listen to the customers and community.
“We are not an ‘us and them’ organisation.
“I think that we will carry on our winning ways in the future.”
Colliers Wood is home to ‘London’s most hated building’ – the Tower.
Paul McGary, Head of the Future Merton Team, said planning permission has been given to convert the former office blocks into flats.
Colliers Wood has always had less interest than its popular neighbour, Wimbledon, but with future investments this is on the course of change.
