Double gold medallist Mo Farah will be awarded Freedom of Richmond Borough to recognise his achievements at London 2012, it was decided on Tuesday.

Mo, who was offered the award due to his inspirational talent and dedication, will officially accept it in a ceremony next year.

“It has been fantastic to see the effect his success has had on people, not just in Richmond Upon Thames, but across the country,” Lord True, Leader of Richmond Council, said.

“It was only right we offered him the highest honour possible we can give to a resident.”

The Teddington athlete has received huge support since becoming the Olympic Champion in the 10,000 and 5,000 metres.

Scores of people have visited the honorary post box which turned gold on Isleworth’s London Road this summer to mark his success.

Lord True said Mo’s achievement was phenomenal and praised his dignity in acting as an ambassador for the borough.

Mo still trains at St Mary’s University when he is in the UK, and was one of the original athletes to work out of St Mary’s Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre when it was launched in 2001.

It is hoped the Freedom of the Borough ceremony will be early in 2013.

The title of honorary freeman is awarded to “persons of distinction and any persons who have rendered eminent services to the borough” under the 1885 Act.
