Boy/girl duos AlunaGeorge and Alpines bolt through their dazzling electro-based sets as they play Kingston’s McClusky’s as part of weekly indie club night, New Slang.

Local emerging acts can be hit and miss, but in this case both duos offer irresistible traits that continue to push musical boundaries. So much so that it’s a tricky task to hurl them into a certain genre.

Kingston’s Alpines are impressive. Vocalist Catherine Pockson closes her heavily-lined eyes to focus on delivering her classy vocal during new EP tracks ‘Deeper’ and ‘Chances’.

Meanwhile multi-instrumentalist Bob Matthews provides an atmospheric accompaniment. He flutters between bass, guitar and a laptop, while finding time to offer some extra vibrations from his rippling drum arrangements.

The room gets busier in preparation for headliners AlunaGeorge. The duo from London signed to Universal records earlier this year and have been making their way on to playlists ever since.

Singer Aluna Francis and producer George Reid come together like puzzle pieces as they establish their workmanship on stage.

Whilst the crowd mimics an energetic Francis, Reid and the backing band stay focused on getting their own jobs done.

Francis’ voice is sophisticated and unique – it isn’t easy to draw lots of comparisons. The production is also slickly executed with certain sounds and samples already having their stamp on, even at this early stage.

They play fan favourites ‘You Know You Like It’, ‘Just A Touch’ and ‘Your Drums, Your Love’. They may even slip in a cover of American rapper Montell Jordan’s 1995 hit ‘This Is How We Do It’, allowing the crowd to warm to the dynamic duo even more.

With their debut album on the way, this next year is certain to be memorable for the underrated pair.
