Plans for a stunning new footbridge connecting Wandsworth harbour to Battersea to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee are gaining momentum.
The footbridge, estimated to cost £19.5 million, has been proposed by new Battersea architects One-World Design and will run adjacent to the current railway bridge.
It will provide excellent links across the river for commuters and businesses, and will form part of the legacy from the Queen’s Jubilee.
One-World Design Director, Chris Medland, designed the bridge having lived and worked in the area for ten years.
The unique bridge will mirror the existing archways of the railway bridge and act as a viewpoint to see famous London landmarks.
“The river front area has changed a lot in the past few years, it is more of a linear park on both sides now, hopefully this bridge will become part of that,” said Mr Medland.
“Bridges like Waterloo Bridge have become so iconic that they are an attraction in their own right.
“We hope that this bridge can replicate that, and be so much more than just a utility for people to get across the river.”
The project recently gained backing from all three council leaders of the nearby London boroughs and is being promoted by Greater London Authority’s (GLA) Richard Tracey and Jane Ellison MP to find private and corporate funding revenues.
“So far, we have done this off our own backs, but the project needs some funding and sponsorship to get it moving,” said Mr Medland.
The company hopes the planning applications will be accepted in time to be announced as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
“The design is impressive to my untrained eye and others who have seen it agree,” said Mr Tracey, GLA.
“We all believe it would be a fitting tribute marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at a point on the river which will play a major part in the Diamond Jubilee River Pageant in June.”
The model of the bridge is currently displayed at the Hotel Rafayel and a public consultation will be held in Battersea Square on May 12.
