Merton Council’s library won a prestigious Local Government Chronicle (LGC) award on Wednesday for delivering top service in the UK.
The award is recognition of the borough’s work with partner organisations and over 450 volunteers to increase efficiency and modernise themselves with self service technology.
Volunteers have contributed 17,600 hours of time since April 2011 which has increased customer satisfaction and has helped to make 40% savings for Merton Library in the last five years.
LGC editor Emma Maier said: “It is a testament to the spirit, determination and commitment of local government, and the people who work in it, that despite this enormously challenging time, you have continued to innovate and achieve.”
Merton’s cabinet member for community and culture Councillor Martin Whelton and the council’s head of library services Anthony Hopkins were presented for the award.
Councillor Whelton said: “We are very proud of our library services. This award is largely attributable to the hard work of our library staff who have embraced change and provide excellent customer care.”
Merton’s library service is currently nominated for a Volunteering England award as an example of good practice.
