An animal lover raised over £800 for Battersea Dogs Home after making an extreme hair style change over the weekend.
While many choose to update their style on a mile stone such as a birthday, Eve Wallman went one step further and combined a hair cut with a bout of fundraising.
Ms Wallman, 28, from Streatham, decided to mark her 28th birthday on Sunday by cutting off the dreadlocks she has had for the past eleven years.
To coincide with the chop she also set up a Just Giving Page called Dreads for Beds, hoping to raise funds for bedding for homeless cats and dogs during the cold winter months.
She had around 50 dreadlocks and asked friends and family to sponsor £5 a lock to raise her initial £250 target.
Ms Wallman has currently more than tripled her original target; with supporters donating £814 so far.
Ms Wallman said: “I was absolutely terrified to get rid of my dreads, but it’s for such a good cause and I feel like I need to experience life without them!
“Plus I constantly get tangled up in them when I sleep, or get them trapped in doors, so maybe convenience is a factor too!”
She added: “I had no idea I had such generous friends and family.”
Ms Wallman, who previously worked for the charity, called Battersea Dogs Home her go to cause, and often found herself preaching the good work that they do to people she meets.
“I love the work they do and as I used to work there I know first-hand how much love and dedication goes into looking after every single dog and cat that comes through their doors,” she added.
Battersea Dogs Home Event Manager Natalie Phillips called Ms Wallman’s hair cut an extremely brave thing to do, especially after growing her dreadlocks for such a long time.
She also stressed the importance of donations as the charity does not any receive central government funding.
She said: “We rely on the generosity and support of people like Eve to help us care for the dogs and cats in our care. We normally have about 500 dogs and 175 cats at our three centres at any one time, so the money Eve raises will really help.”
