Clapham residents invited to make permanent mark on new library

Clapham residents are invited to become a permanent fixture in the community this month.

World-renowned artist, Andrew Logan, has been commissioned by Lambeth Council to create two large scale art works for Clapham’s new public library and leisure centre sites.

The sites are part of the Future Clapham scheme which involves the redevelopment of two sites to provide public facilites of a higher quality with a wider range of services. 

The site will also include a healthcare centre.

Mr Logan has already begun work on a giant red glittering heart that will hang in the new leisure centre.  

He is now appealing to Clapham residents to donate personal keepsakes to be included in a mosiac on the sculptures outside Clapham’s new public library.

The art work will feature two metre high letters spelling out ‘LIBRARY’.

Meredith Gunderson, the Project Curator, said: “Andrew was chosen becuase he has a track record of creating monumental sculptures that last for a long time.

“We felt that Andrew’s work captured the spirit of regeneration, and was very joyful.”

Mr Logan, who has previously had sculptures hung in London’s Heathrow Airport and Guy’s Hospital, Southwark, said he was delighted to contribute to the life of the city.

Residents can donate items at Clapham Library (North Side), Clapham Family Practice and at the new Clapham Library site, both on the High Street, until 31st October.
