Hundreds of walkers travelled through the capital’s streets on Friday night for the Big Issue Foundation.
Over 600 walkers were out in force on Friday for the Big London Night Walk.
The walk was part of the Big Issue’s 20th anniversary celebrations with the aim of raising money for the Big Issue Foundation. The event was also used to raise awareness of homelessness in London.
Big Issue Foundation Director, Anthony North, said: “One of the things this does is show the life behind the badge, behind the magazine – the real people behind it, their achievements and their aspirations.”
He added: “It’s a real community cohesion – it is a fantastic chance to learn everything about people in London that you see every day.”
The participants were in a jubilant mood as Mr North geared them up before the walk with a rousing speech.
Groups of walkers were then let off into the London night, some wearing Night Walk jackets despite the warm conditions following a sweltering day in the capital.
Pat Orbiton, travelled from West Sussex to take part in the walk, she said: “We get to vendors around there and you know it’s quite interesting really.”
The journey consisted of a 15-mile-round trip from Leadenhall Market with six breaks along the way, including entertainment and refreshments at certain stops.
Stephen Robertson Chief Executive of the Big Issue Foundation was one of those who walked the long journey.
Mr Robertson said: “600 people is the most we’ve had, bizarrely this equals the number of people in and around London that sell the big issue.”
“It’s the biggest participation event that we have ever had.”
He added: “It’s fantastic.
“We will only do things that vendors would want to do, and the idea that everybody turns up, supports and raises funds for the work that big issue vendors are engaged with is really powerful.
“It lifts the spirits of homeless people in and around London.”
