Richmond Council are urging up-and-coming runners to try out for the 2012 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games
Team Richmond are looking to recruit Richmond’s athletic stars of tomorrow.
Richmond Council are urging up-and-coming runners to try out for the 2012 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games to help Team Richmond retain last year’s title in which they gained a record number of gold medals.
There is particular need for Cross Country athletes at the moment as the first event of the 2012 calendar is Cross Country, which will take place on Saturday the 19th November.
To be considered for the team young athletes must complete one of the 5K parkruns which are taking place for the next three Saturdays at 9am in Bushy Park, Teddington.
To be eligible athletes need to be born between the 1st of November 1994 and the 19th of November 2000 and live or go to school in the borough.
Cross-country running is often perceived as a very dirty, arduous sport, but many find running very liberating and a great, cheap way of keeping in shape.
Councillor Pamela Fleming, Cabinet Member for Communities on Richmond Council, said: “Team Richmond had a phenomenal result this summer and we are already working towards retaining the title in 2012.
“We have a borough of sportspeople, with some of the highest participation rates in the country and I am sure there are many young people who have the potential to help us win again in the year of the Olympics.
“I urge any young athletes in the borough to take part in the trial.”
Go on, give it a go; you never know, Olympic stardom may beckon…
