An 18-year-old was stabbed in Wimbledon Bridge just before rush hour on Friday.

The victim was in a stable condition at a local hospital on Saturday after suffering several stab wounds, with Merton police currently looking for suspects.

The attack happened in the middle of the street opposite Wimbledon station at 16:15 BST, where shops along the road were cordoned off immediately.

Eyewitness Nicola York said: “I saw a disturbance by the pedestrian crossing sign, and someone had knocked it over.

“I still didn’t realise what had happened, but as I got further in I saw what I thought was ketchup, and then realised it was blood.

“I saw this guy being led off towards the car park, holding his side.”

A number of onlookers were gathered at the scene. Wimbledon musician Roxy Prince said: “Looking back at what has recently happened with looting across the country, it’s quite shocking to see something like this happen at this time of day. Broad daylight, in Wimbledon!

“I’ve not seen anything like this in Wimbledon, ever. Not like this.”

Enquiries into the incident are on going. A police spokesman said: “There has been an altercation in the street and somebody has been stabbed in the neck. We are unsure of who has done it but we are aware a knife was used.

“We will start looking for witnesses and then do our forensic work.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
