Wimbledon celebrities are pushing house prices through the roof with local estate agents reporting last fortnight as the most successful this year.
Figures from home.co.uk reveal a 29% increase on Wimbledon homes since 2006 with a 147% increase in detached houses.
A Wimbledon estate agent believes the rise is due to the combination of the London postcode and the space to build extravagant properties celebrities want.
He added: “The village is a very prestigious area. For those who can’t compete with £17million properties in central London, Wimbledon is their best bet.”
Although the rise may seem bleak for prospective buyers, local businesses are thriving on celebrity arrivals such as footballer Brede Hangeland and comedian Stephen K Amos.
Caroline from Diane Von Furstenburg in Wimbledon Village said: “People love Wimbledon because it doesn’t feel like you’re in London, yet you’re only a few minutes from the West End. But I’m afraid I can’t tell you who shops here.”
But Mathew Kelly from the Dog and Fox said: “There might be celebrities in the area, but they hardly stand out. If anything, that sort of cliental is becoming of the area, rather than being distinctive.”
