Merton residents are invited to help create a unique mosaic sculpture, which will be displayed in the borough from June.
Merton Imagine, a mental health social inclusion charity, is running the programme which involves completing a five feet high, four foot wide sculpture.
John Vaneck, Arts Bridge Builder at Imagine, said “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to get involved in art.”
Sessions will be held at ACAVA studios, Lombard Road, Merton, in May and led by experienced sculpture Lawrence Mathias.
North London based Mr Mathias, who is volunteering his time, will help transfer people’s ideas onto the sculpture.
He said: “These arts and crafts projects will often spark an interest in people who attend and they then become involved in different things.”
“I did wood crafting before with a lady who was having some troubles and it helped give her focus.”
Emily Matcham-Miller, Merton Council’s Arts Development Officer, said the opportunity came about by a lease agreement between the council and arts charity ACAVA, who provide a certain amount of hours every year to the council for similar arts projects.
The sculpture was originally started at the beginning of the year with other workshops.
It is made-up of three plywood panels, with tiles added to create the effect of a sun rising between two cloud shapes, and the words Imagine underneath.
Merton Council and ACAVA studios have yet to decide where the sculpture may go, though they are considering outside green spaces or Merton Civic Centre.
