WATCH: How a London pet rescue tackles rise in pets being abandoned

The number of pets abandoned in Inner London over the winter rose by more than a quarter compared to 2020/21, the latest RSPCA figures show.

Mayhew, a London pet rescue taking care of hundreds of cats and dogs each year, told the South West Londoner that the number of abandoned pets has risen since the pandemic and the cost of living crisis.

Georgina, the Head of Cattery at Mayhew, said that last year half of intakes were unannounced, which is unprecedented and places a massive strain on their resources.

It costs £7500 a day to run the centre, and about £1000 for each animal overall.

Georgina said:”We want to be able to help people, we want to be able to help cats, and it’s really hard knowing that we can’t help everyone.”
